I end this blog with good news! Since publishing my book in 2007, I have traveled to a number of states and had numerous speaking engagements. I was fortunate to have sold TWO printings of "Last To Leave Home". Although my original purpose was to share Mark's journey from home to group home, it has far exceeded my expectations. I have grown so much...especially as I have met so many giving, caring, wonderful people along the way.

His organization has grown, expanding to include all adults with developmental disabilities. In fact, he advises, but is no longer working at the facility. Janice Nodvin, Executive Director/Clinic Director at Adult Disability Medical Home (ADMH), wrote me recently and thanked me for the $5,000 gift. The proceeds from the book included some of the Baker personal money, which helped to make the gift an even amount. Below is a photo of the check presentation to Dr. Rubin.

God bless you all. Now on to book #2--on Leadership---focusing on lessons from my successful husband, Clark Baker. Watch out for the new book coming soon!

It was December 2014 and my husband was retiring. We were moving back to our home in Nashville, Tennessee. Sr. Anna Laura had purchased books for her class on human dignity for Frassati Catholic High School in Houston. After sharing with Sister that I would be happy to come in as a guest author, she invited me to come literally days before we left the state. What a wonderful time I had---the students were impressively astute and asked so many excellent, probing questions. I felt, indeed, honored to be present. Just before mass Sister told me that the students had gained so much from reading the book and because I had autographed each book the students felt the books were theirs to keep and this holy woman shared, "I just have to give each of them the book...I want to order more for next year." "Sister, I only have 84 left here in Houston.

"I'll take them", she immediately proclaimed.

I couldn't believe that just before Mass my books in Houston were sold out! Thank you, Sister, for making this a special moment for me. I am ever so grateful!

I recently realized that with such a hectic time, I had neglected to post this good news. Enjoy the photo of a special occasion!

She even added this photo. Carolyn and her family have a wonderful tradition of meeting quarterly to celebrate birthdays and I imagine simply to take time out of their busy schedules to enjoy each other's company. After listening to my speech given at the St. Michael's Book Fair, Carolyn decided to purchase a book for each attendee as a "favor". I signed the books and inscribed each one by name. Thanks, Carolyn, for making "Last to Leave Home" part of your special occasion.
What I did NOT expect was to have the seats filled almost to capacity and ladies who were a captivating audience. I had so much fun sharing WHY each one should write. Plus I sold almost two boxes of books---I am now left with only 154 books and I'll be SOLD OUT. This sign greeted me which immediately calmed any stage fright that I might have had in preparation to speak. Thank you Cheli and St. Michael's moms for making my afternoon such a delight---it was like coming home with lots of hugs and smiles. God bless you all!
My niece, Jacqueline, and her husband, Ryan, teach at Dan River High School in southern Virginia. This year the school voted for a special young man to crowned homecoming king. His name is PJ Patterson. At first PJ's name did not appear on the ballot---that didn't stop the seniors at this caring school. They WROTE PJs name on the ballot! It is my understanding that PJ won by a landslide. Take a look at this link:
I'm especially proud of my niece, Jacqueline, who teaches students with special needs. She was wonderful to my brother, Mark, and I'll never forget that. Thanks for sharing this story, Jacqueline.

Recently my husband and I experienced the joy of watching a VERY SPECIAL baseball game at the Langham Creek YMCA. This game was part of the national organization called The Miracle League. The YMCA has partnered with this league to help children with special needs play baseball. Thanks to the efforts of Shawn Borzelleri (one of our top Houston YMCA executives), this league has blossomed into a program that continues to grow and give joy to so many children who could never otherwise play the America's favorite sport. The games are excited and heartwarming. The "buddies" volunteer to help each child so that the parents can sit back and enjoy the game too. In fact, they even have announcers which help the ball players feel like they are in the big leagues. Pictured here is my husband, Clark and Shawn, with one of these special ball players. There is currently a campaign to raise enough funds to build a field that will be specifically for these children. The hope is to have a complex which will include a custom-designed field with a cushioned rubberized surface to help prevent injuries, wheelchair accessible dugouts, and a completely flat surface to eliminate any barriers to wheelchair-bound or visually impaired players. After seeing the smiles on the faces of the ball players, the buddies, and the parents, you will want to contribute---I know we did! Shawn, thanks for your hard work in promoting this program---YOU are our MIRACLE! Check out the Miracle League website at

It was a chance meeting. My husband and I were waiting to be seated at our favorite restaurant in Nashville, Tin Angel. I spotted a very happy, upbeat-looking young man who sat down next to us. We began to chat and I found that Matthew's hero is Superman. He proudly pulled out his Superman wallet that has the pictured logo dominately displayed. It was indeed a special wallet. I told his friend, Melissa, that I would send them one of my books. She since has emailed me and told me that Matthew is as remarkable as his hero. Four
years ago his dentist found a malignant tumor in his upper jaw and he had
extensive reconstructive surgery and chemotherapy. He is still cancer free and has such a great attitude. Melissa tells me that he is quite the prankster. She wrote, "He is so special in my life as well as that of his family."
Yes, I think I met a real Superman that day. I hope you enjoy my book, Matthew. God bless you and your family.
But they seem to brighten all of your days
They may be mentally challenged or physically challenged too
But all they want is to be accepted by you
They are a very special gift from heaven above
And if you're patient, they will teach you real love!

"Three Tennessee homecoming king nominees made a unanimous and touching decision that no matter who won, they would give the crown to a beloved student with a genetic condition.
Students Jesse Cooper, Drew Gibbs and Zeke Grissom were all nominated for homecoming king at Community High School's basketball homecoming ceremony.
The teens got together and decided that the winner would turn over the honor to junior Scotty Maloney, who has Williams Syndrome, a neurological disorder that inhibits learning and speech.
'I've been blessed with so many things,' Cooper told ABC News' Nashville affiliate WKRN-TV. 'I just wanted Scotty to experience something great in his high school days.'"
I couldn't resist sharing this. I think you can see through the photo how excited Scotty was to receive this honor. The article went on to say how considerate this 500 member student body is to those with special needs. All schools need to model such caring and consideration. Thank you boys and thank you Community High School.Carolyn Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00969361234298175952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799961431011706068.post-62840046231979850202013-01-18T09:26:00.002-08:002013-01-18T09:45:40.281-08:00Check Out Kelle Hampton's Blog
This mother has such a refreshing blog, especially with her fabulously crisp, sensitive photographs. She is the writer AND the photographer. If you know anyone who is a new mom of a child with special needs, please direct her to this blog. Kelle celebrates the "the small things" and will give hope and joy to all who read it. Thanks, Kelle, for such an upbeat, well done blog---no wonder you have won awards! I hope to give you a taste of her photography soon.Carolyn Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00969361234298175952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799961431011706068.post-87055744130546876792012-12-06T20:59:00.001-08:002012-12-06T20:59:19.822-08:00HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD

My father would have been 87 on December 5. Unfortunately he passed away on October 15. The asbestos lungs he had contracted from a navy ship when he was nineteen just couldn't keep his fragile body going. As you can see from this photo, he was such a handsome man who loved his God, his family, and his country. He and mom had been married for 65 years and, as you can imagine, his death has been very difficult.
One of the best decisions Dad ever made was to keep my brother Mark with his family. We all gained from knowing and loving our special brother. Thanks, Dad, for your many gifts, but especially for the gift of Mark.Carolyn Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00969361234298175952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799961431011706068.post-16784776662533061352012-08-25T22:07:00.002-07:002012-08-26T14:30:06.366-07:00Who is this princess?<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW6Zb3igrLGcXUjKEKSF3lmADR5UoSGc_B3JqRksn3k0jmGW124cInVucI9A5m_ZyqD6cxW8EmezqibjJyF8dk1D8l6yaUstSgBu1XYvFuhGXOQzRkXmkd2LsVwTCfQPM69ZCleIHVnsU/s400/DS+conf.+princess.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5781095723266909170" />
Somewhere in my travels I've missplaced the name of this lovely little girl! She invited me to speak to their women's group at 2nd Baptist here in Houston on March 27. I will share my story about Mark and hope to give ladies encouragement so that each one might decide to write and share her own story.
With a total membership of over 58,000, 2nd Baptist is one church in five Houston area locations. I have the honor to speak at the Woodway location and will be happy to sign books after the luncheon.
Thanks to Gerri Ayers for suggesting me as a speaker and thanks to Mary Ann for the formal invitation.
See you on the 27th.Carolyn Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00969361234298175952noreply@blogger.com
